Programs in California

Welcome Home International

Miraglo Foundation supported in 2012, the work of Welcome Home Int., 501c3 organization, based in San Diego, California at the Las Colinas Detention Center, FAIR dorm projects (Future Achievers in Reentry). Welcome Home Int. serves as one of the few non-profits dedicated to preparing and supporting women being released from confinement. These women are healing from addiction and are frequently working through past trauma and abuse. The recidivism rate for woman participating in Welcome Home is 20% versus 68% for women who lack this kind of necessary support. We find their work inspiring. Here are some thank you letters we received from the FAIR dorm participants:

To Our Gracious Donor,

“By your act of kindness a lot of women to come as well as myself and others already here, will be able to journal and have many things that will help us in our recovery and re-entry process. Your actions will be blessed by God and are greatly appreciated by me. One day I hope to be able to be as selfless as you and give to something as important as this program. Thank you so very much for believing in something that gives women like us a chance to grow and change”.   Sincerely Lydia

Big Animals for Little Kids

During an event, the volunteer teenage helpers dress in Big Animal costumes, paint faces, take pictures of the children with Big Animals and use the photo to create a “picture button” souvenir for them. Most of all, we leave each child with a treasured memory and the assurance that there are people in the world that love them.

The organization’s purpose is to bring joy into the lives of children, especially children facing health, emotional or socio-economic challenges. The Big Animals regularly visit children in hospitals, homeless shelters and foster care facilities.  A majority of the events support kids at Rady Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Kaiser Hospital, as well as organizations that benefit children, such as: The Make a Wish Foundation, the San Diego Center for Children, Christie’s Place, Down Syndrome Action and the American Cancer Society.

San Diego Book Project

The San Diego Book Project is an IRC 501(c)(3) charitable corporation in San Diego, California. Its mission is to collect books and get them into the hands of people who would normally not have access to them - locally and globally. The Book Project donated two tons of books to an orphanage and schools in rural India and nine pallets of books to a village library in Africa.  Several boxes of books were provided to various programs in the San Diego area including the Armed Services YMCA Christmas program, the Alpha Project Winter Homeless Shelter and the Veterans’ Homeless Shelter.

Once a month the San Diego Book Project holds an open house where local teachers are invited to come and take books at no charge. At their last open house, on December 1, 2012, we had over eighty teachers taking books for their classroom libraries, school libraries or to give to the students in their classes.

All of this is done on a volunteer basis including the difficult work of sorting pallets of incoming books.
